About Unix Epoch Timestamps
Unix Time (also known as Epoch Time or POSIX Time) is a system for tracking date-time coordinates. It measures time as the cumulative count of seconds elapsed since the Unix Epoch: Thursday, January 1, 1970, at 00:00:00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), ignoring leap seconds.
Why is Unix Time popular? Computers and database indices handle integers far more efficiently than complex string structures representing timezones, months, and leap years. Converting timestamps to integers allows instant date-range comparisons and timezone translations.
Seconds vs. Milliseconds: Java, JavaScript, and newer systems commonly use 13-digit millisecond timestamps, whereas native POSIX, PHP, and Unix shell APIs traditionally count in 10-digit seconds. Our tool converts both models instantly.
