Planning

API Project Estimator

Select endpoint volume, authentication, data stores, integrations, and traffic to get a planning-level complexity score and development effort range.

Complexity

Moderate

Planning effort range: 41–90 engineering days. This is not a quote, staffing plan, or delivery promise.

Architecture considerations

  • Treat auth as a product: token lifetime, rotation, and a test user matrix.
  • Model the domain explicitly; avoid a single ‘data’ table that becomes an untyped dump.
  • Idempotency keys and signature verification are mandatory for money and stock events.

Estimates describe planning ranges and architecture considerations. They are not guaranteed pricing, staffing plans, or delivery dates.

Discuss Your API Project

How to use it

  1. Choose the number of endpoints you expect to expose.
  2. Set authentication, database, integrations, webhooks, and realtime needs.
  3. Add documentation and traffic expectations.
  4. Read the complexity summary, architecture notes, and effort range.

Example

A 15-endpoint billing API with OAuth2, one relational database, two payment providers, outbound webhooks, and OpenAPI docs typically lands in a mid-complexity range rather than a weekend integration.

FAQ

Is this a quote?

No. The estimator produces a planning range. Formal quotations require discovery, existing-system review, and a written scope.

Why is effort shown as a range?

Unknowns such as undocumented vendor APIs, data cleanup, and compliance reviews routinely change delivery time. Ranges communicate that uncertainty instead of hiding it.

Can I use this for internal APIs?

Yes. Internal APIs still need authz, versioning, and operational concerns. Mark traffic as internal/low if the API will not face the public internet.

Next step

Need this wired into a real system?

Estimators and converters help you think. Delivery still needs contracts, environments, and an owner.
